Link: Infants With Rare Genetic Disease Saved By Cord Blood Stem Cells.
Krabbe Disease is one of several rare genetic disorders called lysosomal storage disorders. Babies with Krabbe lack an enzyme that helps protect the developing brain, and most are dead by age 2. But researchers in North Carolina, reporting in this week's New England Journal of Medicine, say they can prevent this brain damage by infusion of umbilical cord stem cells and give these children a chance at a normal life. This is a big step forward.
